G-20 Has Impact upon the Arts for Pitt Community
September 16, 2009 PITT ARTS at the University of Pittsburgh announces that there are a number of changes with regard to access to the arts due to the G-20 Summit taking place in the downtown, North Side, and Oakland areas of Pittsburgh on September 24th and 25th.
PITT ARTS Cheap Seats partner, CLO Cabaret is closing its run of 8 Track: The Sounds of the 70’s for September 24th and 25th. Closed also on those dates will be all of the Carnegie Museums, including Museums of Art and Natural History, and The Andy Warhol Museum, for which PITT ARTS offers Free Visits; Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, another Free Visits cultural community partner will be closed during the 23rd and 24th of September. Phipps plans to re-open on the 25th, but they advise interested people to call regarding that day.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has rescheduled their concert featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony from its position during the G-20 on September 25th, 26th and 27th to June 4th, 5th and 6th, 2010. Pittsburgh Symphony Heinz Hall will remain closed during the 24th and 25th.
The August Wilson Center for African American Culture has moved their Marc Bamuthi Joseph performances originally scheduled for September 24th and 25th to October 28th and 29th.
“Given the fact that the perimeter of the G-20 Summit will pose a significant difficulty downtown, the overall effect on Cheap Seats buyers from PITT ARTS has been nominal, with prompt rescheduling of performances for alternate dates, but Free Museum Visits will have the greatest impact with so many closures during the summit” says Annabelle Clippinger, Director of PITT ARTS. The exceptions are the Mattress Factory museum on Pittsburgh’s North Side and the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh’s Strip District which plan to remain open“
I recommend that members of the Pitt community who were disappointed about the rescheduling of Beethoven’s Ninth to purchase and enjoy the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Vivaldi Four Seasons concert Oct 1st-4th” says Clippinger.
Pittsburgh Opera’s performances of Eugene Onegin and the August Wilson Center for African American Culture’s performances of popular dance company, Philadanco, are both set to begin as planned downtown on the evening of September 26th.
