PITT ARTS announces 2009-2010 Pitt Nights
PITT ARTS in collaboration with our arts partners in the Cultural District, announces six stunning Pitt Nights in 2009–2010. For a great price Pitt students, faculty and staff can attend a fantastic performance, enjoy a dessert reception, and meet the artists from the shows. And there is no need to worry about parking downtown, optional free transportation is available through PITT ARTS. 8-TRACK, The Sounds of the 70’s is a joyous journey through the greatest hits of the 1970s, starring the music of The Emotions, The Carpenters, The Doobie Brothers, Labelle, Barry Manilow, Marvin Gaye, The Bee Gees, Helen Reddy and many more! Put on your polyester shirt, wrap-around skirt, platform shoes (don’t forget your mood ring) and boogie on down. With its powerful rhythms and dazzling harmonies 8-TRACK, The Sounds of the 70’s is a rockin’ good time. Tickets are $14 for Pitt students, faculty and staff. Inspired by Pushkin's great novel, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin brings the tragedy of luckless lovers to life. Eugene was simply irresistible. What could Tatiana do? She fell in love on the spot, and committed her deep feelings to a fateful letter. But who knew a duel would change their world? Tickets start at $10 for students and $20 for faculty and staff. True love awakens with a kiss, as Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre brings to life one of the world’s most beloved fairy tales and greatest classical ballets. This whimsical story of a slumbering princess features delightful fairies, a dashing prince, the timeless tale of good versus evil and Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score performed with a live orchestra. A comic extravaganza brings together the vibrant fairy kingdom, a quartet of mismatched lovers, the bewitched Bottom, and a band of bumbling rustics in the world's most magical play. Experience the O'Reilly Theater’s transformation into an enchanted forest in this ravishing new production of Shakespeare's exhilarating masterpiece. Tickets are $17 for students and $28 for faculty and staff. Get ready for the play at the pre-show dessert reception with members of A Midsummer Night’s Dream production team.
Friday, February 5, 2010, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mutter and Eroica
Legendary violinist, Anne-Sophie Mutter, has captivated audiences with her virtuosic and mesmerizing performances. Mutter performs the romantic Brahms Violin Concerto. Beethoven originally wrote Symphony No. 3 Eroica to honor Napoleon, until Napoleon declared himself Emperor. The revolutionary composer angrily removed the dedication, making Beethoven himself the hero of this piece. Ladysmith Black Mambazo threads the intricate rhythms and harmonies of its native South African musical traditions with the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. During the past four decades, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry and solidified its identity as a prolific, cultural powerhouse.
